This was reported by nutritionist and pediatrician Elena Manokhina from the Molecular Diagnostics Center CMD of the Sverdlovsk Branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.
According to her, the optimal amount of nuts for a healthy person is about 20–30 grams per day. One can be guided by a small handful that can fit in the palm of the hand. Excessive consumption of salted nuts can exacerbate heart, kidney, and joint problems, cause edema, and lead to digestive issues. Therefore, individuals with gastrointestinal diseases should limit themselves to the daily norm, as noted by Gazeta.Ru.
The specialist also mentioned that in some cases, nuts may contain a toxic substance called aflatoxin, which negatively affects the human body.
Manokhina added that under certain conditions, bacteria on the surface of the nuts can release harmful substances, including mycotoxins. However, aflatoxin is destroyed during heat treatment. Therefore, after purchasing nuts, it is recommended to wash them to remove dirt and subject them to heat treatment. This will reduce the risk of food poisoning, as improper storage can lead to the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms in the nuts.
